Fanboys—Vivendi Entertainment (Blu-ray)

Movie: 3/5 Video: 2.5/5

Extras: 3.5/5

Four friends take a hilarious road trip across the country to honor the wish of their dying buddy - to break into George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch and watch "Star Wars: Episode 1" before the movie's worldwide release.

While we constantly see things about the Trekkies, we rarely get such a glimpse into the world of Star Wars “Fanboys”. This one follows four of them as they make their way across country to steal the reels of Episode 1 from George Lucas himself. Anyone who knows the Star Wars dogma will find this one hilarious and identify with the geek storyline. It was also great seeing all the great cameos throughout including Jay and Silent Bob, Carrie Fisher, Lando, and Captain Kirk!

You can tell this one was made on a shoestring budget. The HD presentation is decent, but far from the formats full potential. Overall resolution is on the softer side and the image lacks the depth and dimension of bigger budget films. While it will certainly look fine on smaller screens, don’t expect it to jump out of your big one. The DTS-HD 5.1 mix does a decent job and the sound design obviously throws back to plenty of familiar Star Wars sounds. The rest of the mix is pretty typical for the genre but offers enough spaciousness to be convincing.

Extras include some retrospective featurettes and plenty of interviews and comic relief. You also get an intro and feature commentary along with a collection of webisodes.

Die hard Star Wars fans and film geeks in general will probably fall in love with this one instantly. The rest of the planet will find some laughs too. Recommended.
