Aperion Audio Announces Compact, Affordable Subwoofer

Passive radiators fell out of favor with loudspeaker manufacturers in the early 1980's, but the technology always showed promise for extending the low-end response from small cabinets. Tigard, OR-based Aperion Audio, formerly known as EdgeAudio, has revived the design with the introduction of a new 150-watt powered subwoofer selling for just under $400.

The SW-8PR/150 features a front-firing eight-inch driver and two eight-inch passive radiators that are said to "eliminate the 'chuffing' noise sometimes associated with vented enclosures." The sub accepts both speaker-level and line-level inputs, and has a variable crossover with a range of 40Hz to 180Hz, a level control, a phase switch, a three-position power switch, and a detachable power cord. Rated at 88dB, Aperion's new subwoofer has a frequency response is 35Hz - 180Hz. The SW-8PR/150's rigidly-constructed "dual composition" cabinet is only one cubic foot in volume, which allows it to be placed in almost any room without intruding. The SW-8PR/150 is finished in "furniture-grade cherry hardwood," and carries a direct-purchase price of $387.00.

"With the introduction of our new eight-inch cube subwoofer we can offer a very affordable home theater system that fits easily into a smaller room, yet delivers performance and aesthetics usually found in speakers costing much more," said Aperion Audio president Win Jeanfreau. "Our one-inch thick cabinet goes beyond the industry standard to provide the rigid construction necessary to ensure the best possible performance, while the quality of our cherry finish provides a degree of elegance unknown at that price."

The compact subwoofer measures 13 (H) X 12.25 (W) X 12.5 (D) inches and weighs 27.5 pounds. It can be purchased alone for use with other systems, or purchased as part of an Aperion Audio surround-sound speaker system, with five matched Aperion 502D satellite speakers for $1,199.00. Special offer alert: During the month of June, Aperion is offering a Pioneer DVD player for only $99 with the purchase of a surround speaker system.

Aperion's speakers are made using the patented DiAural® technology, which increases the size of the apparent soundstage while improving the sense of sonic realism. DiAural® is also said to improve the durability of a loudspeaker's drivers, making them virtually "burnout proof."
