Amazon Starts Streaming in Dolby Vision Today

Starting today, Amazon Video is streaming TV shows and movies encoded in the Dolby Vision high dynamic range (HDR) format, according to Dolby Labs and Amazon.

The first wave of Dolby Vision content includes the second season of the Amazon original series Bosch—the hour long drama based on Michael Connelly’s internationally best-selling Harry Bosch book series—and the movies The Smurfs 2, After Earth, Men in Black 3, Hancock, Salt, Pineapple Express, Fury, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Chappie, and Elysium.

Dolby Vision content is available for streaming via the Amazon Video app on compatible Dolby Vision enabled smart TVs, including OLED and Super UHD models from LG, which are also equipped to stream industry-standard HDR10-encoded content. Amazon said Amazon Prime subscribers can watch Bosch in Dolby Vision at no additional cost to their membership.

“Today is just the beginning,” said Jim Freeman, vice president of Amazon Video. “We will continue to expand our selection, adding more movies and TV series for our customers to watch and enjoy in the premium picture quality of HDR.”

“With the increased number of Dolby Vision enabled TVs now in market, Amazon’s commitment to deliver Dolby Vision content to consumers marks another leap forward in providing…access to exceptional movies and original content that come to life on screen,” said Curt Behlmer, SVP, content solutions and industry relations for Dolby.

The Dolby Vision HDR streams will co-exist with currently available industry-standard HDR10 streams, according to press reports.

Amazon, Netflix, and VUDU intend to expand their HDR libraries with more Dolby Vision titles, according to a press release LG issued today, which noted that Amazon and Netflix each plan to deliver 150 hours of HDR content by the end of 2016. LG also said Dolby Vision is the only HDR option offered by Vudu and that the format is the default for Amazon and Netflix.
