Every year at the Consumer Electronics Show, previously unknown companies make their debut. One that caught our attention this year is Fountain Valley, CA-based V Inc. This year, the company hopes to leverage its expertise in the computer display field with a foray into home entertainment, with a line of affordable plasma displays and an MPEG-4 DVD player.

In January, football fans will get an unprecedented opportunity to explore high-definition television thanks to an agreement reached December 20 between CBS Television and Thomson Multimedia's RCA division. The partners have signed a deal for sponsorship of American Football Conference Divisional Playoff games on January 11 and 12, 2003, and the AFC Championship game on January 19, 2003.

Loudspeaker manufacturer NHT is slimming down its offerings in more ways than one. The Benicia, CA-based company has announced that its new lineup will be reduced from the current 30 models to only 18. The new speakers themselves will be smaller than their predecessors, according to vice president and general manager Chris Byrne, thanks to advances in woofer technology that allow deeper bass to be generated from smaller cabinets with narrower front baffles.

Consumers typically have just two objections to surround sound: the proliferation of loudspeakers and their cost. Torrance, CA-based Nirotek America appears to have solved both problems with the ingenious Niro Two 6.1 System, available in October.

Less is more, the old adage has it. Torrance, CA-based Nirotek America has taken the concept to an extreme with its recently unveiled NIRO 1.1 and NIRO 1.1 PRO home theater audio systems. The systems are claimed capable of delivering full Dolby 5.1 surround sound performance from a single speaker.

Just say no to black, brushed aluminum, and dark wood veneers. Tigard, Oregon-based EdgeAudio is betting that movie fans will do exactly that when they seen the company's new line of home theater speaker systems. Conceived by award-winning Ziba Design, EdgeAudio's entire line of home theater speakers and subwoofers will get the color cabinet treatment later this year. Prototypes were displayed at the Consumer Electronics Show in January.

The DVD format continues to gain momentum. Earlier this year, DVD rentals exceeded VHS in units and dollar business for the first time, sure signs that videotape is headed for extinction.
