Sony Raises a Glass

Sony just announced a new speaker that's quite unique. The new Sountina NSA-PF1 is a glass speaker. The Sountina is based on a vibrating glass tube. Sound is omni-directional, as the tube vibrates three-dimensionally in all directions. Afraid it will look like a misplaced fluorescent bulb?

Img_003The glass tube inside the Sony Sountina can be illuminated internally in your choice of blue, amber, or purple. Make mine purple. They're on sale in Japan on June 20th, and will only set you back $10,000 for a pair.

How do the speakers measure up? Frequency response is stated to be 50 - 20,000 Hz, 85W power consumption, and an assortment of inputs. The speaker measures stands 73 inches tall, making quite an impressive statement. With a weight of 27.5 pounds, they won't easily tip over. But, if you live with a bull-in-a-china-shop type of person, you might want to rethink your speaker choice.-Leslie Shapiro
