Sennheiser Updates its Popular HD 650 Headphone

Sennheiser has launched a new dynamic headphone that builds on the popular HD 650 open-back model it introduced more than a decade ago.

The HD 660 S ($500) is said to surpass the performance of its predecessor thanks to an improved acoustic design with lower harmonic distortion and a new proprietary transducer that uses stainless-steel fabric, adapted to the contour of the diaphragm, to improve control. Sennheiser said the transducers, which also feature lightweight aluminum voice coils, are selected and paired by hand to guarantee tight, ± 1 dB tolerances.

A lightweight frame made of anthracite, finished in matte black, supports elliptical ear cups, shaped to follow the contour of the ear. Comfort is enhanced with thick padding on the headband and replaceable ear cushions.

Sennheiser designed the HD 660 S with a 150-ohm impedance to ensure compatibility portable hi-res music players as well as stationary hi-fi components. The company says the headphone reaches its potential when connected to the balanced outputs of a dedicated headphone amplifier such its own HDV 820 or the balanced outputs of a portable digital audio player.

Accordingly, the headphone is equipped with a detachable OFC copper connecting cables with either a 6.35 mm stereo plug or balanced 4.4mm Pentaconn stereo plug; a 6.35mm-to-3.5mm adapter is also provided.
