Roku Gets an Update

The Roku box for streaming Netflix flicks is getting an upgrade that will let it support HD content. How much for the upgrade? Nothing! Not bad for a player that only cost $100 to begin with.

The update is automatic, sent over an Internet connection. At the moment, Netflix doesn't have a huge selection of HD content, but here's the interesting bit of new information . . .

According to Roku, other content providers might be supporting the Roku player early next year. So, it's not just playing in the Netflix sandbox. Nice.

The online video market is expected to explode to a $4.5 billion industry by 2012. You might want to look at one of those spiffy Blu-ray players with Netflix connectivity - just so you're not left behind when 2012 rolls around. —Leslie Shapiro
