Charlie Price has just inherited his family’s shoe factory, but times are tough in the classic men’s shoe business, and he’s forced to lay off longtime employees. Faced with shuttering the plant, and following a chance encounter, Charlie hatches a plan to save the factory—he’ll tap into the underserved market for high-heeled transvestite boots. He enlists Lola, a drag queen in Northampton, England, as his chief designer.

Based on a true story, Kinky Boots follows in the footsteps of other threadbare, slightly raunchy Brit cinema, such as The Full Monty and Calendar Girls. You just know someone is going to throw caution to the wind and take a chance for a big score, looking ridiculous in the process, and all will turn out OK in the end. But it’s always a fun and very human journey, and this is no exception.

The DVD is fairly well heeled for an indie film, containing deleted scenes—including one that sheds more light on the inner turmoil of Lola—and an engrossing, 15-minute featurette on the real-life shoe factory on which the story is based. Things didn’t work out quite so sunny in the end, but that’s what dramatic license is for. There’s also a scene-specific commentary from the director and key cast members. Congenial and informative, it’s an easy listen. Together with a colorful, 2.40:1 anamorphic picture and a Dolby Digital 5.1 track that serves the music-heavy soundtrack well, this is an all-around-fine DVD for anyone who likes their entertainment with a cockney accent.
