Hard Times Hit HDTV?

These economic times are tough on everyone. Is the TV hardware business immune from the troubles? In a conference centered around HDTV displays, the news was surprisingly optimistic.

In the past, manufacturers were concerned about dropping prices as the market was flooded. However, as some discount brands failed and others turned their attention to the higher-priced market, sales appear to continue to rise.

Why?

As the February, 2009 switch to digital TV gets closer, more consumers are running out to get new sets, and as more and more HD content becomes available, those consumers are getting new HD sets.

Plus, bigger screen sizes are becoming more appealing, warranting a higher price. Also, newer features are another opportunity to push up prices.

So, maybe it's time to upgrade to a bigger HDTV so you can watch the stock market crashing on CNN HD. -Leslie Shapiro
