DVD REVIEW: Boston Legal

20th Century Fox
Series •••• Picture/Sound ••• Extras ••
Boston Legal is broadcast in high-def on ABC, where its detailed scenes of the law-firm headquarters, realistic-looking courtroom, and breathtaking aerial and skyline shots of Beantown all look terrific. None of this is done any justice in the mediocre images presented on this five-disc set. Indoor shots are soft, bordering on fuzzy at times, with lots of grain and blotchy-red skin tones. Exteriors are grainy, too, and have merely average detail. Sound is adequate, with clear, solid dialogue in the center channel. But even though the series' funky music is pushed to the surrounds, it sounds pinched. Boston Legal is only two years old; this set makes it seem like 20. Extras include three fluffy production featurettes. [NR] English, Dolby Surround; letterboxed (1.78:1) and anamorphic widescreen; five dual-layer discs.
