Comcast XFINITY TV APP Streams onto the iPad

If you're a Comcast subscriber and an iPad user, make sure you download the XFINITY TV app. While not the streaming app widely hoped for, it's at least partially there. The killer feature is that it lets Comcast subscribers stream TV to their iPad from anywhere there's a WiFi signal. No 3G streaming yet. Before you get too excited, there's some limitations.

Like the version for the iPhone/touch, you can navigate TV listings, browse the On Demand library, and control your TV and DVR.

With the iPad, and if you're a Comcast Video and Internet subscriber, you can stream content to the iPad using the "Play Now" feature. But, and this is a biggie, the only content available for streaming will be from from Comcast's On Demand library of a few select channels. These include: HBO, Showtime, Starz, Encore, MoviePlex, Cinemax, TBS, TNT, BBC America, Cartoon Network, and only presuming you're a subscriber to those channels.

It can't, for example, let you watch the episode of House that's airing right now, or what you recorded on your DVR last night. It's also not available on the iPhone/touch Still, it's a step in the right direction.

If you're already a Netflix or Hulu Plus subscriber, is the XFINITY TV app really that much of a bonus? Probably not, but there's likely content on HBO or Showtime On Demand that isn't on Netflix yet, and since you're already paying for those channels... So if you're not at home, but near strong WiFi (and that happens... when?) then this would be great.

The XFINITY TV app is free right now from iTunes or for more info about Comcast, you can check out their FAQ.
