Sennheiser and Massdrop Pay Homage to a Classic

Sennheiser’s latest partnership with the community-driven commerce platform Massdrop has yielded a set of headphones that pay tribute to a popular model it introduced 25 years ago — the HD 580 Jubilee, which helped pave the way for a number of well-known audiophile headphones, including the HD 600 and the HD 650.

The “Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 58X Jubilee” was designed with feedback from Massdrop, which describes itself as a community-driven commerce platform that makes products with input from its enthusiast members. The product, which is being offered for the introductory price of $150, marks the second collaboration between the companies and follows the success of the Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 6XX, launched in 2016.

The over-ear or “circumaural” HD 58X Jubilee contains design elements of the original HD 580 Jubilee — including the glossy black headband and gray metal grilles — but introduces new, more efficient 150-ohm drivers. Sennheiser likens the sonic signature of the HD 58X to that of its highly regarded and far more expensive HD 600 ($400) and HD 650 ($500): “A clean, extended bass response is combined with a smooth and clear upper midrange.”

Weighing only 9.2 ounces, the HD 58X’s earpads are covered with soft velour to ensure “hours of comfortable listening” and the headphones are equipped with a detachable 6-foot cable made of OFC copper with a reinforced gold-plated 3.5mm plug.

Key specs include a rated frequency response of 12 Hz-38.5 kHz –10 dB, <0.1% THD + N of (1 kHz, 100 dB), and a sound-pressure level (SPL) of 104 dB (1V, 1 kHz).

“In Sennheiser, we have found a partner who is listening to our community and is able to respond quickly to input we receive,” said Steve El-Hage, Massdrop CEO and co-Founder. “The design and sound signature of the HD 58X Jubilee were crafted based on this direct feedback, enabling Massdrop to quickly deliver on exactly what the enthusiast community is asking for.”
