It's Oscar time! And since no one on the Sound & Vision staff actually belongs to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (our applications keep getting kicked back to us), we're celebrating this past year's best pictures our own way - by declaring which films (and TV shows) actually have the best pictures . . . and sound!

For standard DVD, Warner has collected five Stanley Kubrick classics in a Directors Series box - but on Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD, they're only available individually. Full Metal Jacket was released in high-def previously, so I'll stick to the four debuts.

Happy Feet (Warner HD DVD). Looking bizarrely realistic at times, the creatures of Happy Feet seem to almost come off the screen, their bodies are so three-dimensional. Each figure is incredibly detailed, with individual feathers and fur hairs visible. And it's not just birds and beasts.
