I get plenty of requests for AV advice from friends and acquaintances. Most of it comes from people who are really into the hobby. Often, these people already have a specific product in mind, and it's almost like they're testing me. Other folk really want you to agree with them in going with their wallet and picking up a cheap plasma at Costco because, hey, it's cheap. Well, sadly, I am not a walking talking dictionary. My first line of defense is to tell them they should check out the Buyer Guides on our web site(s). This, to many, strongly resembles work. I should do it for them and (sigh) I often do.

So here I sit, my furniture all rearranged like an overcrowded antique store, just so I can be in the sweet spot. It is speaker review time again at the Manteghians.' It takes a long time to break out and set up speakers, and you've lots of boxes to deal with. But the simplicity of a speaker is what is most appealing. No HDMI to DVI handshaking problems, no video cross-coding issues, no 3:2 pulldown. You just sit down and listen to music and watch movies. Of course, it's only enjoyable when the speakers in question sound great – like this Definitive Technology Mythos system does.

"The new phone book is kinda' slim. Everyone must be switching to cellular," Gina remarked seeing what I was holding.

As I leave Denver after three days of being under the gun to pump out show reports (don't worry fans, it was only friendly fire), I can sit back and shoot for the bigger picture.

Across the street from the convention center, find memorabilia from last week's <strike>hysterical</strike> historical event. Blue pant suits are buy-one-get-one-free, but the Jonathan Edward's bobble-head dolls (hey, you have order these months in advance, so who knew!) were my favorites.

Somebody slap me, I must be having a nightmare. Didn't we just go through a format war? Didn't Toshiba just <a href=" http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/251617/Toshiba_Loses_its_Shirt_Wit... target="new">get the living crap beat out of them</a> trying to push the HD DVD format down the throats of a world that thinks a) Sony is better (who knew you could get so much mileage out of "Trinitron") and b) people prefer blue disc cases to red ones (<a href="http://joehallock.com/edu/COM498/preferences.html" target="new">no really!</a>).

The LG 71PY1M plasma may have a great 1080p picture, but along with the 65" Fujitsu, the price just seems ridiculously high. $14,999, sorry, that's the most I could afford.

<span style="float:left;color:#D4D4C7;font-size:100px;line-height:70px;padding-top:2px;font-family: Times, serif, Georgia;">F</span>or less than half the price that my BMW dealer wants to hook my iPod to the 530i's stereo, you can use Belkin's <a href="http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=257270" target=new>TuneBase FM for iPod</a> to hear your music collection through your car's FM radio. It's not an original idea and it's not a first, but it is extremely well designed and implemented. For the most part.

Fans of "The Office" would recognize Melora Hardin in a heartbeat as Jan, Michael's boss. "Monk" fans think of her as Trudy #2. And if you're addicted to "Gilmore Girls," the just completed season had Melora playing what we all hope will be a regular role on the series. Bet you didn't know she was an amazing singer though, did you?

It's not often I get a chance to have Dave Wilson himself conduct a demonstration of his latest creation. In this case, it's the Wilson Watt Puppy VIII. That's more incarnations than a Rocky movie, but after 14,000 pairs sold, the Watt Puppy is an icon that some love and some don't. I found the pair I heard many generations ago (I want to say 1998) too incisive and too insistent. The new VIII are much more inviting without losing a bit of the detail I remember as that speaker's forte. Dave himself seems to have mellowed. With top of the line Audio Research electronics, he kept the music down to realistic – not bombastic – levels. New are the tweeter, taken from their much larger Maxx speakers, new M3 cabinet material (a carefully prepared laminate product more than 10 times the cost of more typical MDF) and a 20 lb weight reduction (which of course translates to better gas mileage). A five song demo, starting with the a cappella group Ladysmith Black Mambazo and culminating in Art Garfunkle syrupy version of the song made famous by Johnny Mathis, "I've only got eyes for you," left me wishing we could practically review the speakers in a home theater environment. Better yet, seek them out and have a listen for yourself. They were simply wonderful.
