Philips to Offer Free Shrek DVD

Philips Consumer Electronics has announced plans to offer a special edition DVD of DreamWorks' animated hit film Shrek free with the purchase of a select group of DVD-Video players and other products during the winter holiday season.

The promotional Shrek will be a double-disc DVD that includes more than 11 hours of bonus features, among them an all-new, never-before-seen extended ending created for the VHS and DVD release. Other extras include DVD-ROM and set-top games, a filmmaker's commentary, goofs and outtakes, and a feature sure to please the kids: "Shrek's ReVoice Studio" that lets viewers dub their own voices over some characters' lines in twelve of the film's most familiar scenes.

The national promotion was announced in late September, will begin November 23 and will run through February 2, 2002. "We are thrilled to be a part of this DVD promotion," said Mark Buss, chief marketing officer, Philips Consumer Electronics North America. "What makes Shrek so impressive is the creative use of digital technology, from the animation to the interactive DVD menus. Many Philips DVD-Video players boast Progressive Scan technology which is the closest you can get to viewing theater-quality movies from the comfort of your living room. Philips' technology coupled with the amazing visual effects in Shrek, are a movie enthusiast's dream."

DreamWorks Home Entertainment chief Kelly Sooter agreed. "This promotion provides us with an excellent opportunity to offer Philips' consumers the ideal DVD to enjoy with their new DVD player," Sooter commented. "With the digital-to-digital transfer and all-new extended ending, plus hours of extra entertainment, viewers will be able to see Shrek like it's never been seen before." Buyers of Philips products included in the promotion will get a mail-in coupon good for the free Shrek DVD. The disc was dubbed directly from its digital master and should offer excellent video quality. Both widescreen and 4:3 versions will appear on the disc, according to DreamWorks.
