Ethan Hawke plays Edward Dalton, a researcher in the year 2019, when an unknown plague has transformed the world's population into vampires. As the human population nears extinction, vampires must capture and farm every remaining human, or find a blood substitute before time runs out. However, a covert group of vampires makes a remarkable discovery, one which has the power to save the human race.

It seems like we’re getting an endless supply of vamps lately. Thankfully this one didn’t go for the teenage swooning that the others seem billed for and instead went a new direction with the lure. The world has been infected with a disease that has turned the population into vamps. Now only a few true humans remain and most are harvested for blood. But that supply is running out. I liked the new direction and the production values here were great. They’ve set this up as the beginning of a series so it should be interesting to see where this one goes.

While Lionsgate delivers a very good looking disc, I found the focus to be a bit too inconsistent. Some scenes offer tremendous fine object detail while others seem almost blurred. I loved the razor sharp sequences and the stark contrast of the photography, but the back and forth was a bit distracting. The sound design offers some nice punch and atmosphere and the surround soundstage lended a lot to the experience.

Extras include a lot of behind the scenes footage and interviews. You also get a short film from the film’s director. A feature commentary is also included along with a digital copy.

It is refreshing to see a new take on the vampire genre, which has been a bit played out lately. Lionsgate serves up a great Blu-ray making this an easy recommendation for fans of the genre.
