Following up on the successful Barbershop films, Beauty Shop stars Queen Latifah as Gina, a single mother who quits her job as a hairdresser at a fancy salon to follow her entrepreneurial spirit. With a smaller loan than she requires, Gina takes over a run-down beauty business and realizes her dream of success. A formidable supporting cast—including Alicia Silverstone, Alfre Woodard, and Djimon Hounsou—provide the one-liners and help keep Gina's shop running smoothly.

The DVD's dialogue-focused Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack performs well, delivering all of the jokes clearly through the center-channel speaker. And, when the bass-heavy music kicks in, it's full and rich-sounding. However, when it comes to the 2.35:1 anamorphic picture, the bright, vivid colors tend to get noisy, and some of the highlights are blown out (no pun intended). In addition, many of the wider, more complicated scenes lose detail.

With a not-so-funny gag reel and a relatively standard making-of featurette, the supplemental material doesn't add much to the overall package. While director Bille Woodruff offers commentary on the feature, it's only available for a selection of scenes, and it doesn't shed much light on the tenor of the production. Considering Queen Latifah's producer credit on the film, which is prominently displayed in the opening credits, it's a shame that she didn't participate in the commentary.
