Theaters Bottleneck 3D Movie Glut

A shortage of 3D-capable theaters may damage the box office numbers for the glut of 3D movies scheduled for release this year.

Nineteen 3D movies are coming this year. A typical big release would hit 3000 to 10,000 screens. But there are only about 4000 3D screens in North America. That will rise to 5000 by December but that still leaves a serious shortfall of screens for all those forthcoming movies.

So a lot of those 3D movies will probably make their greatest impact in home theaters. Makers of TVs and Blu-ray players are rushing to get 3D-capable hardware into homes this year.
