Step Up 3D: 3D has finally gone too far

I think we can pull back on the 3D at this point. This weekend, I went to see Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, and at the theater I saw a very curious movie poster. It said Step Up 3D, and depicted two people dancing while a red guy wearing a hoodie pushed them with his palm and dozens of little blue people partied under them. Clearly this was a sequel to Step Up and Step Up 2 the Streets, movies about young people dancing.

Like the name implies, Step Up 3D will be in 3D. What isn't readily apparent is why it will be in 3D. It's a dance movie. No sprawling landscapes, no jump-out scares, no large, colorful special effects. It's just people dancing. Either this is the evolution of 3D as a method of showing cinematic entertainment that transcends all genres, or... it's a very odd and gimmicky cash-in to get more people to watch the film. Either way, it's darn strange.
