Sony Announces Pre-Sale and Pricing for Ultra Thin 4K TVs

Sony today announced pricing and availability for two of its 2015 4K Ultra HD TVs , the X900C and X910C, both touted as frameless, ultra thin models.

The X900C will be available in 55- and 65-inch versions, which will sell for $2,499 and $3,999 when they becomes available in July; the screen on both models is less than 0.2 inches thick. The 75-inch X910C, which will carry a suggested retail price of $5,499 when it ships later this summer, is hailed as “the thinnest TV of its size ever made.”

The Android TV-powered models support Google Cast and include Sony’s X1 and X-Reality PRO processing, which upscales HD content to 4K resolution. Pre-loaded streaming apps include Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, YouTube, Hulu, CBS News, CBS Sports, Crackle, NBA Game Time, Pandora, and SlingTV.

The new models are available for presale now at sony.com, as well as Best Buy and Amazon.

Is this what the market wants ? Thin panels suffer from color uniformity issues if edge lit. Sony has to follow up with side inputs, and proprietary wall mounts. They'll sell 10,000 units to designers, but 4,000 sf suburban home owners ?
Samsung and others are introducing High Dynamic Range and nano-crystal displays. Should Sony match that ?

I'm with Tony on this one. If thin and UHD are the only selling points of this TV, it's a hard sell for the consumer. Nobody at the entry level market would obviously buy it yet nobody at the high-end wants it, either.

Even without the HDR capability, Sony (and Samsung for that matter) still don't have OLEDs in the current line-up. If anyone is bothered by changes in contrast, color and black level when viewing off-angle, they won't go for the majority of the offerings in the market now. The purpose of the HDR capability from Samsung would largely be defeated by this shortcoming.

Isn't anyone bothered by these issues?
