See the Movie, Wear the Suit
If you've got the bucks, you can. Last week, New Line Cinema began auctioning off memorabilia from some of its most successful films as part of the company's marketing campaign to promote its e-commerce website. According to a press release from New Line, "We believe there is tremendous growth in online e-tailing [electronic retailing], and these auctions will create a unique partnership with collectors and film lovers worldwide who are searching for authentic movie memorabilia and rare, one-of-a-kind gifts."
Hundreds of classic props, signature costumes, and promotional items from such hit films as Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Boogie Nights, Spawn, Blade, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Mask, Dumb and Dumber, Money Talks, Wag the Dog, and Lost in Space will be available to the highest bidder with the click of a mouse. A catalog of upcoming items can also be found on the website.
Opening bids for the first auction started on June 30 and will remain open until July 14; New Line says it will post new lots weekly. The company claims that auction inventory will be continually restocked with new collectible props, wardrobe, or promotional items culled from the company's films, and each auction session will feature a one-week sales window with real-time interactive bidding. A portion of the proceeds generated from each purchase will be donated to charity.
In addition to the Corvette, the company says it is auctioning the "SWINGER" license plate from Austin Powers' Shaguar, the roller skates worn by Rollergirl (Heather Graham again) in Boogie Nights, a police badge and bicycle from Pleasantville, another badge from Rush Hour, pinball machines and arcade games based on Lost in Space and Austin Powers, signed scripts and posters, animation cels from the hit television series The Mask, and a treasure trove of collectible costumes, including the clown suit from Spawn, Blade's "menacing outfit," a pair of fuzzy boots from Dumb and Dumber, and the evil threads worn by Dr. Evil and Mini-Me.
