Runco's New Plasma Displays

Runco International has introduced two new widescreen flat-panel plasma monitors. Both are 16:9 units offering true high-definition performance, supporting 720p in its native resolution.

The new 50" and 43" models, the PL-50HDX (50") and PL-43HDX (43") incorporate Runco’s proprietary PFP controller with ViViX processing. The PL-50HDX offers 1280 x 768–pixel resolution; the PL-43HDX does 1024 x 768. Runco claims an unprecedented black level and contrast ratio, combined with the company's "Expanded Dynamic Gamma" technology; as a result, the new displays are said to achieve a "new quality benchmark for flat-panel displays."

Runco’s PFP ViViX controller incorporates "a powerful video processor to get the most from the wide variety of recorded and broadcast/cable/satellite video formats." Its video processing circuitry accepts all video formats, including high-definition 1080i, 1080p, 720p, and extended-definition 480p, as well as NTSC-standard (480i) video, and optimizes them to take advantage of the full HD resolution of the panel. The PFP ViViX features proprietary 3:2 pulldown processing for maximum quality from programming originating on film, and videophile-grade edge enhancement. A unique feature is Runco's "Virtual Wide Aspect Ratio," which reproduces TV-formatted 4:3 programming on the widescreen displays without image distortion.

Inputs include composite, component, S-video, and a digital video interface (DVI) input "fully compliant with HDCP (high-bandwidth digital content protection) protocols for future copyrighted HD sources," according to a recent announcement. "By incorporating DVI HDCP, the PL-43HDX and PL-50HDX are compatible with forthcoming high-definition DTV tuners equipped with digital-direct outputs in this format."

Each monitor also features an RS-232 port for integration with home theater or automated media control systems. A full-function infrared remote control is included with both models. The units are only 4" deep, and can be wall-mounted or used with optional stands. The PL-50HDX lists for $16,995, and the PL-43HDX for $12,995. Both models are available now from Runco dealers.
