Pioneer Announces Affordable Network AVRs

Two affordable 7.1-channel network AV receivers will join Pioneer’s Elite series lineup in April.

The LX101 ($500) and LX301 ($700) are 7.1-channel models rated to deliver 7 x 80 and 7 x 100 watts into 8 ohms, respectively. Both are Dolby Atmos-enabled for 5.1.2 and 5.2.2 configurations and upgradeable to DTS:X via a firmware update scheduled for the fall, support high-dynamic range and 4K/Ultra HD passthrough (60p/4:4:4 24-bit video) with HDCP 2.2, and are equipped with Pioneer’s MCACC auto calibration system and Phase Control, which is said to improve clarity in the middle and high high-frequency range by compensating for lags that can occur between the subwoofer and main speakers.

Both models also feature a Reflex Optimizer said to create more seamless surround sound by aligning the phase of direct and reflected sound from Atmos-enabled speakers that bounce sound off the ceiling to create a sense of height.

Other common features include Hi-Res audio support for 192kHz/24-bit for FLAC, WAV, AIFF and Apple lossless file formats, DSD (2.8/5.6MHz), and Dolby TrueHD plus wireless connectivity via GoogleCast, AirPlay, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and FireConnect, a wireless protocol that mirrors connected audio sources on optional FireConnect-compatible speakers in other rooms (future firmware update required).

Supported online music services include Pandora, Spotify, TuneIn, Tidal (future firmware update required).

Beginning April 1, Pioneer said all 2016 Elite AV receivers will be upgraded to a three-year warranty.

That doesn't look like a Pioneer (although it is). It reminds me more of a Yamaha....but hey - Pioneer used to have amber lights too.....nostalgic look indeed!

Word of advice to anyone who is shopping for receivers: In addition to reading every page of the user manual I highly recommend contacting their technical support / customer assistance with any question you may have. This will test how much they care about their customers. For example, I purchased a Pioneer SC-85 and enjoy it but hate the complete lack of customer service for any technical issue I am having. I also hate that they have completely ignored all requests I have for help with an issue that is covered under warranty but since help isn’t in their vocabulary a warranty is completely meaningless. They could offer a lifetime warranty but if their policy is to ignore all faulty equipment issues it doesn’t benefit the customer at all. Wisdom from the school of hard knocks.
