Paramount Releases DTS:X Blu-ray Titles

Paramount has released four Blu-ray Discs featuring the DTS:X object-based surround sound technology DTS announced more than a year ago to compete with Dolby Atmos.

The initial slate is Daddy’s Home, The Big Short, Zoolander No. 2 The Magnum Edition, and Whiskey Tango Foxtrot with more to come. The first four titles also support DTS Headphone:X playback, which “puts listeners in the very center of the film’s soundscape, creating an immersive experience.” Prices range from $12.99 to $27.99.

Paramount didn’t announce any of the DTS:X titles it is planning for future release but the addition of these movies brings the number of discs with DTS:X soundtracks to about a dozen. More than 50 Blu-ray Discs with Dolby Atmos soundtracks are currently available and more than a dozen Atmos titles are available for streaming on Vudu.

DTS:X playback requires a receiver or surround processor with DTS:X decoding. So far, Denon, Marantz, Sony, Trinnov, and Yamaha have delivered DTS:X to a number of AV receivers and processors via firmware updates. DTS said more brands are expected release firmware updates for their products throughout the year, including Acurus, Anthem, ARCAM, Integra, Krell, McIntosh, Onkyo, Outlaw Audio, Pioneer, Steinway Lyngdorf, and Theta Digital/ATI. Yamaha is also slated to deliver a DTS:X firmware update to its YSP-5600 sound bar this summer.
