Onkyo Releases Spotify Update and Control App

Onkyo today announced that a free firmware update enabling Spotify Connect on 2014-model network-ready Onkyo AV receivers, controllers, and HTiB packages is available for download.

Compatible models include the TX-NR535, TX-NR636, TX-NR737, TX-NR838, TX-NR1030, and TX-NR3030 AV receivers; the PR-SC5530 AV controller; and the HT-S5700, HT-S7700, and HT-S9700THX home theater packages.

The update enables Spotify Premium subscribers to stream more than 20 million tracks via the Spotify smartphone/tablet app and make calls or use other apps without interrupting playback.

In a separate announcement, the company said a new iOS 8-compatible app for iPod touch/iPhone is also available for download via the App Store. The free Onkyo Remote 3 app is said to “seamlessly combine control and streaming functionality in one easy-to-navigate user tnterface.”

The app is compatible with all Onkyo network AV receivers and controllers manufactured since 2011 (TX-NRX09 and later), the TX-8050 stereo receiver, and CS-N755 mini hi-fi system.

Among its features, the app is said to:

  • Stream music stored on iPod touch/iPhone with familiar song organization (album, artist, playlist, and genre), album art, and content information
  • Enable song, album, playlist, and channel selection from online streaming services
  • Locate and stream Hi-Res PCM, 2.8 MHz DSD (2013 models onward), and 5.6 MHz DSD (2014 models) stored on compatible network-attached devices
  • Locate and stream lossless and compressed audio from DLNA-compatible servers and PCs
  • Integrate compatibility with Spotify Connect (2014 receivers only)
  • Manage playback in up to three zones from anywhere within range of the home network
  • Enable fast input source switching
  • Enable limited control of other AV and hi-fi components connected via Onkyo’s RI (Remote Interactive) terminals and compatible Blu-ray players via CEC
  • Provide access to the main setup menu on compatible Onkyo AV receivers
