Next-Gen Display Gets the Ax
As the LCD and plasma categories have matured, some manufacturers have been developing next-generation displays that would supposedly take performance to the next level. One of those display technologies was the Field Emission Display (FED). Alas, Sony has pulled the plug.
FED was a joint project of Sony and TCI, the Chinese owner of the RCA brand. It was similar to the equally ill-fated SED in its use of carbon nanotubes to emit electrons into phosphor dots, but had a different tube structure.
FED was to have made its debut in 2009, and the developers even planned to buy a Pioneer plasma plant in which to produce it--but the whole project fell victim to cutbacks in the rocky economy. Aside from the occasional trade-show glimpse over the past few years, videophiles may never get to see FED at all.
