Netflix Gets Movie Savvier

Netflix has struck a deal with Relativity Media that will bring some movies into streaming distribution within a few months of their disc release, around the same time as premium pay-TV channels get them, and ahead of other streaming services.

The agreement will bring 14 movies over the next year including The Fighter, Skyline, Movie 43, and Season of the Witch. Netflix streaming customers will be able to add them to their Watch Instantly queue.

You may not have heard of Relativity Media, but the company has had a hand in the financing or production of more than 200 movies with $13 billion in box office revenue, ranging from big budget films to low budget films. Recent titles include Dear John, Brothers, The Wolfman, It's Complicated, Zombieland, Couples Retreat, The Bounty Hunter, Get Him to the Greek, Robin Hood, and Grown Ups. We must hasten to add that whether any of these will come to Netflix streaming remains to be seen. But we can dream a little, can't we?
