Just when you thought it was safe to watch 3D TV without the dorky glasses, theeey're back. Our buddies over at Gizmodo have found a JVC prototype TV at the CEATEC show in Japan that converts high-def 2D video into pseudo 3D, in real-time, using a small processor.

Throwing caution to the wind, and checking to make sure you have some aspirin, you put on the glasses. Your brain switches a few gears and in a few moments it is fooled into seeing a 3D effect. No, it doesn't provide the same depth as more traditional 3D systems, but it does impart more than a little depth. Wow. The potential for a Hollywood film to have some depth. I made a little joke there.

One downside: Without the glasses, the display looks a little blurry around the edges.

The system can convert conventional or high-def 2D video (from video cameras, players, games etc) to high-def 3D. According to Gizmodo, the system would work with DVD movies, but not animated films. As is often the case with prototype technology, JVC is mum on any possible product releases. -Ken C. Pohlmann
