The Truman Show—Paramount Pictures (Blu-ray)

Video: 2.75/5
Audio: 4/5
Extras: 3.75/5

Truman is about to discover just how abnormal his seemingly "normal" life is. What he doesn't realize - just yet - is that his whole life is a reality TV show, televised and broadcast for the world to see!

This is definitely one of my favorites when it comes to Jim Carrey. His physical brand of humor is really hit or miss with me and most of the time I find his over the top nature a bit too contrived. This one tones it down just a bit and delivers a very interesting take on the reality series idea.

This is one of the more disappointing transfers I’ve seen from Paramount. The image is very flat and has a bit of a pasty look to it. Fine detail looks smeared out but the image still retains a decent sense of dimension in tighter shots. Image noise isn’t much of an issue and the picture looks like it was cleaned up a bit then artificially sharpened with some obvious ringing from time to time. Considering Paramount’s normal level of quality with video presentations, this one was a bit disappointing.

The Dolby TrueHD soundtrack delivers a very spatial mix with nice presence in the main soundstage. Dialogue can sound a bit thin from time to time but nothing distracting. This isn’t an overly dynamic mix but it has some decent extension when the film’s direction needs it. The surround soundstage does a great job with the natural ambiance and there are some discrete cues from time to time.

Extras include a two-part making of feature that goes over the production and includes interviews and behind the scenes footage. You also get a look at the visual effects of the film. Some deleted scenes and a photo gallery are also included along with the trailers.

While one of the better films in Carrey’s back catalog I must say I was a bit disappointed in the video presentation overall. Fans may want to consider a rental before a purchase.
