The Private Lives of Pippa Lee—Screen Media (Blu-ray)

Movie: 4
Picture/Sound: 3.5/3
Extras: 2.5

Rebecca Miller adapts her own novel with this comedy drama about a woman who begins a second life after her husband leaves her for a younger woman.

I had never even heard of this film before receiving it for review. It amazes me how many rich character pieces full of great actors don’t even make it to the local Cineplex anymore, but we are bombarded with canned crap week in and week out. This one covers the bizarre life of Pippa Lee, a woman married to an older man who we see at different stages of her life. The story is full of great heart and more than its fair share of laughs and the twists and turns show more real life than most cinema these days. I loved the story and the performances in this film!

Screen Media does a decent job with this release. The photography has a very natural look to it and the Blu-ray captures the subtle film grain and softer look of the film stock. Colors are natural if not a bit muted and detail is there when it needs to be. This isn’t a razor sharp slick Hollywood production so don’t expect the polish of a high budget feature. The audio is largely the same with a pleasant atmosphere and very natural tone and timbre from the dialogue.

Extras include a feature commentary with the star Robin Wright and the director. You also get an interview session with some of the cast.

This is a great character piece with charm and laughs. The whole cast delivers and I loved the back and forth in the lives of Pippa. Definitely worth a look!!
