As an assassin, Jack is constantly on the move and always alone. After a job in Sweden ends more harshly than expected for this American abroad, Jack retreats to the Italian countryside. He relishes being away from death for a spell as he holes up in a small medieval town. While there, Jack takes an assignment to construct a weapon for a mysterious contact, Mathilde. Savoring the peaceful quietude he finds in the mountains of Abruzzo, Jack accepts the friendship of local priest Father Benedetto and pursues a torrid liaison with a beautiful woman, Clara. Jack and Clara's time together evolves into a romance, one seemingly free of danger. But by stepping out of the shadows, Jack may be tempting fate.

Such a beautifully lensed film. This is one of those films that could be dubbed art for its gorgeous photography and stunning locales. Detail is incredible throughout with fine object detail rivaling the best I’ve seen on the format. The color palette is slightly stylized but lends to the mood and atmosphere of the film. Dimensionality is terrific and I loved the long shots of the Italian countryside. The soundtrack is a bit more subdued in its delivery but no less effective adding a nice atmosphere that helps with the tension in this methodical character study.

Extras include a feature commentary with the director and a look at the production of the film. Some deleted scenes are also included. This release also has a digital copy for portable devices that is advertised as a limited time offer.

It seems I’m always a fan of Clooney’s more artsy work. I loved this film despite its slower pace, but I’m also a huge fan of his other more artsy works like Out of Sight and Solaris. This is a beautifully shot film that I found engaging from beginning to end and this Blu-ray does a spectacular job with the presentation. Recommended.
