Bloggers across the globe have said so much about Snakes on a Plane—even months before the film was released—except for the one thing that matters. Is the movie any good? The short answer is, no, it’s not good. Not by a long shot.

It’s called Snakes on a Plane, people. The title saved me a whole paragraph of plot description. It should have been on the Sci-Fi Channel or gone direct to video, starring Casper Van Dien. Instead, we get Samuel L. Jackson, who has to save a plane from snakes. How the snakes get there isn’t really important, because logic is not a concern of this movie. The movie is about having some scares and some laughs. Whether you laugh with it or at it is up to you. For the record, I found the movie to be dumb but quite fun.

The joy of watching Snakes on a Plane on an enormous TV is that it enhances the endeavor’s cheesiness. Presented in a crisp 2.35:1 anamorphic transfer, the CGI snakes look like they hopped out of a video game and into your living room. And the sound is perfect. With the Dolby Digital 5.1 and the DTS ES tracks, you can hear snakes slithering around your house, giving ophidiophobes even more to squirm about. For what it is, the flick looks and sounds great.

The disc is stuffed like Jon Voight in an anaconda’s mouth with extras—interesting extras, not just PR backslapping. There are deleted scenes, a gag reel that’s actually funny, the music video for the song that plays over the end credits, trailers, and some DVD-ROM content, as well. There are four documentaries about the making of the film, including one that documents the film’s rise through the Internet, profiling many of the bloggers who helped make Snakes on a Plane what it is. There’s also a crowded commentary track featuring director David R. Ellis, some FX crew members, producers, and the man himself, Sam Jackson. It’s fun to listen as they all quiet down and get into the film when the snake attacks begin. There’s also a lot of ribbing of Jackson’s proclivity for golfing instead of working.

Snakes is not a very good movie, but it’s hard to find something this enjoyable. It’s the perfect film to watch with friends, preferably with large quantities of alcohol involved.
