King's Ransom—New Line

Anthony Anderson stars as Malcolm King, an obnoxious, egotistical business owner who arranges his own kidnapping to avoid paying his ex-wife (Kellita Smith) in a messy divorce settlement. What he doesn't know is that his ex-wife, an underappreciated employee (Nicole Parker), and a random doofus (Jay Mohr) have their own plans for Malcolm. There are a lot of funny people here and some hilarious dialogue, but these parts don't add up to a complete sum of a movie.

The 1.85:1 anamorphic picture showcases Malcolm's bright and colorful suits, as well as the ladies' pastel outfits. The pinks and yellows are distinct to each character and create a nice palette. The Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack pops the music, and the sub and surround usage nail the ambient sounds nicely.

Audio commentary, deleted scenes, and a gag reel are some of the extras on this Platinum Series disc, but I really enjoyed the behind-the-scenes documentary much more than the film. It is a robust 45 minutes and gives quite a thorough look into lots of departments (set design, costume, etc.) and gives a nice depiction of just how collaborative the making of a movie is.

Anderson has some great moments, and some scenes are laugh-out-loud funny, especially the first sight and entrance of ex-con Herb (Chappelle's Show's Charlie Murphy). Diehard Anderson fans might enjoy it, and, overall, the movie may not completely fall flat, but it certainly drops down to its knees.
