Disney’s A Christmas Carol 3D—Walt Disney Pictures (Blu-ray)

3D Video: 5/5
Audio: 5/5
Extras: 4/5

When three ghosts take penny-pinching Scrooge on an eye-opening journey, he discovers the true meaning of Christmas - but he must act on it before it's too late.

This is by far one of the most impressive 3D Blu-ray presentations I’ve seen yet. Zemeckis has definitely shown that he knows how to do 3D well. Depth is pronounced the most and can almost give you a sense of vertigo at times. The bigger the screen, the richer the sensation with this one. I also didn’t notice anything in terms of ghosting. There is a fair amount of 3D that comes out of the screen at you, but thankfully they didn’t go to gimmicky with this one. The soundtrack is delivered in blistering 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. Dynamic range is impressive and there are some system threatening sequences in this one. Disney definitely goes a little darker with this story and the low bass punctuates the ominous tone of the story through most of the film. Surround channels are used aggressively with nice panning effects and plenty of envelopment.

Previously I had reviewed the two-disc edition of this film. The 3D release includes both the 3D Blu-ray presentation plus the normal Blu-ray presentation on a separate disc. You also get a DVD copy of the film and a Digital copy for your portable devices. On the Blu-ray there is a pretty cool picture-in-picture feature that shows the motion capture used to make the characters while you watch the film. You also get a countdown to Christmas feature and some on-set features that give you more insight into the creation of the film and the people involved.

This is one of the best looking 3D releases so far with a very immersive image and a unwielding soundtrack that really seals the deal. While this is definitely a darker film for the Disney moniker, I couldn’t recommend it more for the 3D library.
