After.Life—Anchor Bay (Blu-ray) Page 2

Movie: 3.5/5 Video: 4/5

Young couple Paul and Anna are toying with the prospect of marriage when they have a chance encounter with Eliot, a mysterious undertaker who claims he can speak with the dead. When Anna becomes caught in the otherworldly realm between life and death, she risks being buried alive. Will Eliot help her, or is he being driven by darker motivations?

Certainly one of the most bizarre death tales I’ve seen in some time, After.Life takes on a completely different look at the after life and leaves you guessing what is real and what isn’t even after the credits start rolling. I can see audiences having a very hard time with this one simply because it doesn’t make anything easy on the viewer. Just when you think you have it figured out, you don’t. I found this style refreshing and daring. A great head twister for those that love the macabre.

The HD presentation is solid with great fine detail and plenty of dimensionality. Darker scenes exhibit plenty of shadow detail and depth and the brighter scenes show off the rich resolution the format offers. The PCM 5.1 mix is also a surprise with plenty of tension and atmosphere. The score plays right into the mood and there is some nice sound design at work.

Extras include a look behind the scenes with the actors and crew and a feature commentary by the film’s director. The trailer is also included.

Given the cast and story I’m surprised this one didn’t make a wide release. It is a great “ghost” story with plenty of twists to keep you guessing. Recommended.
