I Want My DVR!

A new study out of London reveals what we all already knew. 70% of DVR owners say that they cannot live without their DVR. Almost 9 out of 10 Americans said they can't live without their DVR. Okay, "can't live" might be a bit of an exaggeration, but these folks feel that it's the most essential household technology item for them, second only to their mobile phones.

The survey was commissioned by NDS, the company behind the non-TiVo DVR's used by DirecTV.

The survey has some pretty funny results too.  A DVR might be the key to a happy marriage. Why?

According to the survey, DVR owners with partners say that having a DVR makes for a happier home life. I could have told them that.

The survey covered many countries, and the results are global. 89% of Americans, 81% of British, 80% of Australians and 78% of Italians all reported that the DVR has improved how much they enjoy watching television. Most folks said that they would rather give up their home phones, dishwasher, radio and MP3 player than give up their DVR. However, Italians ranked their hairdryers more essential than a DVR. Would that change if they moved their DVR to the bathroom? -Leslie Shapiro
