High-end Custom Install Preamp of the Future

Even if you thought custom installation was expensive before, the new Gryphon Mirage Control Amplifier from Gryphon Audio Designs of Denmark will likely give you a new frame of reference when it comes to how much you can actually spend on multiroom audio.

The futuristic-looking, drop-dead gorgeous, modular Mirage is a three-piece control amplifier consisting of a solid aluminum remote control (referred to as a "magic wand" by Gryphon), a detachable control section, and a preamplifier main chassis.

The Mirage's control section can be mounted to the preamplifier chassis for what Gryphon calls a "(slightly) more conventional appearance." For those with more unconventional tastes, the control section can be remotely located away from the preamplifier. In this configuration, the system uses wireless communication between the control section and the preamplifier's main chassis.

Gryphon offers optional dedicated software for the Mirage that makes for easy integration with both AMX and Crestron home automation systems. The unique configurable capabilities of the Mirage package offer multiple installation options, including:

  • displaying the entire package "as a piece of high tech sculpture";
  • displaying only the control section - as a way of getting in touch with your inner minimalist - and hiding the preamplifier's main chassis in some dark equipment closet;
  • totally stomping on the feelings of the industrial designer by conealing the whole shebang in a far away place whilst maintaining total control thanks to a Crestron or AMX touch screen.
  • Gryphon's founder and CEO says the goal of the Mirage is "to make Gryphon-level audio quality available to a new audience who are not necessarily hardcore audio enthusiasts, but who are equally serious about sound quality, design and ease of use." Since the Mirage sells for almost 17,000 Euro (around $21,000 US), prospective owners are going to need to be just as serious about spending money.
