HE2005 Seminars Announced
Home Entertainment 2005 opens April 28, 2005, to members of the trade only.
The Show is open to the public April 29–May 1, 2005.
Educational Seminar Schedule
Friday, April 29
Noon– 1pm. Concepts in Convergence
Moderator: Krissy Rushing, Editor, ConnectedGuide.com
Convergence is a hot subject right now, as the worlds of photography, home theater, music, movies, gaming, and gadgets come together. Managing all of these digital media can be challenging, especially if you don't know what products are available out there to help you do so. Meet the editors of Home Theater, UltimateAVmag.com, and Stereophile, along with industry luminaries and manufacturers of convergence gear. Discuss the latest in this burgeoning new area and bring your questions.
2—3pm. HDTV Super Session
Moderator: Maureen Jensen, Editor, Home Theater
Join a panel of industry experts for the latest information on the state of the transmission art, from standard-definition to high-definition Television. Is it time to buy an HDTV? What is CableCard and do you need it? Will you need a special antenna to get off-air HDTV? This is your opportunity to ask questions and get the real scoop from the editors of Home Theater magazine, top HDTV manufacturers, and other industry luminaries.
4–5pm. The Great Debate: Subjectivism on Trial
Moderator: John Atkinson, Editor, Stereophile
The Great Debate between "subjectivists," who hear differences among audio components, and "objectivists," who tend to ascribe such differences to listeners' overheated imaginations, rages as strongly in the 21st century as it did in the 20th. Join Stereophile editor John Atkinson and one of the Internet's leading audio skeptics, Arny Krueger, as they debate each other on where the line should be drawn between honest reporting and audio delusion.
Saturday, April 30
Noon –1pm. Upgrading and Tweaking Your Home Theater
Moderator: Editorial Staff, UltimateAVmag.com
Join the editorial staff of UltimateAVmag.com, editor Tom Norton, technical editor Scott Wilkinson, and contributing editors Fred Manteghian, Peter Putman, Michael Fremer, and Robert Deutsch, as they discuss and answer your questions about how to improve your home theater, what's coming soon to your nearest audio/video dealer, setting up surround-sound systems, HDTV, the upcoming war of High Definition DVD formats, video displays, and more.
2–3 pm. Big Screen Technologies 101
Moderator: Geoffrey Morrison, Video Editor, Home Theater
Editors and contributors from Home Theater and UltimateAVmag.com are on the hot seat to answer your questions about video technology. Got a question about video displays, plasma, LCD, DLP, or even CRT? Trying to decide if a video projector is in your future, or if that one-piece, hang-on-the-wall plasma is your best bet? Join Home Theater vdeo editor and moderator Geoff Morrison, UltimateAVmag.com editor Tom Norton, UltimateAVmag.com technical editor and Home Theater video editor Scott Wilkinson, and UAV and Home Theater contributor Peter Putman in a lively discussion of the ins and outs of all of these options and how to make the best choice for you.
4–5pm. Stereophile Shootout: Ask the Editors
Moderator: John Atkinson, Editor, Stereophile
The pages of Stereophile come alive when you can speak directly with the editors. "Ask the Editors" is your forum to congratulate, commiserate with, and discombulate Stereophile's legendary writers. Come prepared with questions.
Sunday, May 1
10–11am. Stereophile Analog Clinic
Moderator: Michael Fremer, Contributing Editor, Stereophile
Don't bring your sick turntables—it's not that kind of clinic. Instead, "Analog Corner" scribe Michael Fremer will show you how he goes about setting up a turntable, installing a cartridge, and cleaning LPs. There will also be time for questions and comments.
Saturday, April 30 & Sunday, May 1 Photo Workshops
Each day will offer more than five hours of workshop instruction from leading professional photographers. The one-on-one training will help you to get the best from your digital camera.
Seating for all seminars is limited; attendees are encouraged to arrive on time.
The Home Entertainment 2005 Show is sponsored by Primedia's Home Technology and Photography Group: ConnectedGuide.com, eDigital Photo, Home Theater, Petersen's PHOTOgraphic, Shutterbug, Stereophile, and UltimateAVmag.com.
In addition to free seminars, show attendees are invited to attend a special concert with the improvisational jazz-funk ensemble Medeski, Martin & Wood on Friday, April 29, at 8pm. Concert proceeds benefit the Elf Foundation, a nonprofit charity that brings music and films to children experiencing extended stays in hospitals across the country.
