Gadget Gary: Myvu Crystal

If you travel a lot like I do, you probably lug along a laptop or a personal DVD player. The Myvu Crystal is much lighter and less bulky. Screen angle and glare are no longer issues - and best of all, you don't have to worry about other people seeing what you're watching. (I'd always feel uncomfortable on a plane when, watching a show like Deadwood, a sex scene would pop up. I'd have to contort my body and the screen so the lady sitting two rows behind me wouldn't yell at me because her 10-year-old kid saw some nudity!)

Myvu sent along an iPod loaded with video, including scenes from The Incredibles and War of the Worlds. I got the best results with those kinds of action clips. I cued up the scene at the end of I Am Legend where the Infected are throwing themselves at the glass; the picture was sharp, and the action really came to life. Seeing it unfold literally in front of my eyes, with the sound of glass breaking in my head, made for a topnotch portable experience.

I tested the Myvu Crystal in the comfort of my own home. I suspect that when you wear it on a plane or a train, you might get some weird looks. Never mind: You'll be more than satisfied with your hands-free, private Myvu screening. And when your fellow passengers actually realize what you're doing, you're bound to get some jealous looks.
