Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 8350 LCD Projector HT Labs Measures

HT Labs Measures

Contrast & Resolution
Peak white level: 16.5fL
Black level: 0.021fL
Peak contrast ratio: 786:1

The peak-white level was just about perfect for a front projector in a dark room, but the black level was fairly high, leading to a not-so-great contrast ratio.

Grayscale & Color Accuracy

Without tweaking the color-management system, green was somewhat oversaturated, and red was slightly oversaturated, but the rest of the colors were quite close to correct.

After adjusting the CMS, the colors measured right on target. However, real-world material looked dreadful, so I disabled the CMS for most of my watching.

A color-temperature setting of 5500K (seen here) was the closest to accurate; a setting of 6500K (theoretically the ideal specification) actually skewed strongly toward blue. Before calibration, the color tracking was increasingly deficient in red and blue as the brightness dropped.

After calibration, the color tracking was nearly perfect, with only a slight deviation at the bottom end.

  • 3:2 = film-originated content sent interlaced to display (broadcast movies and many TV shows)
  • 2:2 = progressive video-originated content sent interlaced to display (not common)
  • MA = Motion Adaptive (interlaced video-originated content sent interlaced to display; becoming common for 1080i TV shows)

The Epson 8350 is among the very few displays to pass the 2:2 test, though this is not a common cadence among broadcast and other sources of video material.
