Broken Trail may have been dragged down by superficial similarities to the classic Lonesome Dove, but it uses outrageously good performances and a unique story to carve its own spot in the pantheon of great Westerns. And the small screen doesn't stop director Walter Hill (The Warriors, The Long Riders) from delivering the color-drenched, widescreen landscapes that make it all work so well on DVD. Sharpness and detail abound; you can positively feel the power and beauty of the stallions as they make the long drive from Oregon to Wyoming. Sound is equally strong and atmospheric, engulfing you in the natural surroundings of the trail. Sadly, a 23-minute, standard-issue featurette is the only extra in this two-disc set. [NR] English, Dolby Digital 5.1; letterboxed (1.78:1) and anamorphic widescreen; two single-layer discs.
