Digital Entertainment Spending Tops 50% in April-June Period

Consumer spending on digital content accounted for more than half of all home entertainment spending in the April-June period, according to preliminary numbers released by the Digital Entertainment Group (DEG).

Subscription streaming and electronic sales led the way, posting year-over-year gains of 25% and 21%, respectively, during the first half of 2015, while video-on-demand experienced a 4.5% decline.

Physical media continued its slide with sales of discs down 14% from the first half of 2014 and “brick and mortar rentals” down 8%.

Overall sales of electronic media exceeded $940 million, reflecting a 20% increase over the first half of 2014. Total U.S. spending on home entertainment during the first half was $8.75 billion, virtually unchanged from the same period a year ago, but outpaced the box office value of video release by about 3%.
