Definitive Technology Announces New Bipolar Speaker Lineup

Definitive Technology today announced a redesigned fourth-generation version of the front/rear-radiating BP10 bipolar tower speaker it introduced 25 years ago.

The BP9080X ($1,749 each) is the flagship of the new BP9000 series, which includes three additional floorstanding models: the BP9060 ($1,099), BP9040 ($899), and BP9020 ($649). The line also has three center-channel models—the CS9080 ($999, CS9060 ($699), and CS9040 ($499)—and two surround-channel speakers: the SR9080 ($349) and SR9040 ($249). Rounding out the line is the A90 add-on height module ($499/pair) for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X surround sound setups. All models ship at the end of the month, except for the BP9080X, CS9080, and SR9080, which are expected to ship late summer.

The new line continues the minimalist “grille wrap” design for which the company is known and uses aluminum dome tweeters throughout. The BP9080X features an integrated two-way height module, a bass section with a 12-inch woofer plus two bass radiators and a 1-inch tweeter with a 5.25-inch midrange driver above and below. The remaining towers use the same driver configuration for their bass sections but with a smaller 8-inch (BP9020 and BP9040) or 10-inch woofer (BP9060) and use either 3.5-inch (BP9020) or 4.5-inch midrange drivers (BP9040 and BP9060).

All four tower models feature ”inert” one-piece cabinet construction with an integrated powered subwoofer, cast aluminum base with spikes/hard-floor glides, and brushed-aluminum top plate that conceals a connector for the optional the A90 height module. Other tower highlights include Def Tech’s Intelligent Bass Control technology and patented Forward-Focused Bipolar design to produce a “broader, room-filling soundstage.”

The center-channel models feature an 8-inch subwoofer (CS9060 and CS9080) or bass radiator (CS9040 and CS9080) and a 1-inch aluminum-dome tweeter flanked by dual 4.5-inch (CS9040 and 9060) or 5.25-inch (CS9080) midrange drivers.

Both surround-channel models achieve a bipolar dispersion pattern using two 1-inch aluminum dome tweeters with two 3.5-inch (SR9040) or 4.5-inch (SR9080) midrange drivers.
