Dave Matthews on Blu-ray

Make that Dave Matthews and fellow guitarist Tim Reynolds. Way back in 1999, they released Live at Luther College. Now, 8 years later, they're Live at Radio City. Make that, of course, Radio City Music Hall. RCA announced on Wednesday that double-CD and double-DVD versions of the April 22 concert will be issued on August 14. But more important for S&V readers is the fact that, 2 weeks later, the title will appear on Blu-ray Disc - the very first BD release by RCA.

Even more important is exactly how high-rez the double-BD will be: The concert was filmed entirely in high definition, and the soundtrack offerings will include a 5.1-channel surround sound mix in Dolby TrueHD.

If you preorder from the Dave Matthews Band Web site, there are bonus CD options you can choose from.

Meanwhile, DMB is back on the road this summer (tour dates). And no wonder: According to a recent story in Billboard, the band has become "the biggest American rock & roll act in touring." In the period from 1996 to 2006, it sold more than 12 million concert tickets - second only to the Rolling Stones. It's a statistic that, says Dave, "boggles my mind a litle bit."

He also says that performing is still "fun. And it's pressure. It's both things." But then so is barbecuing, as he recently told Rolling Stone. "I like to barbecue, but I'll tell you the truth: It's a lot of f---ing pressure. I can't handle the pressure." As someone who has spent many hours in front of a small Weber grill, with spatula and fork in hand, all I can say is: I hear ya, Dave. -Ken Richardson
