Avatar Breaks Blu-ray Records

Avatar is breaking Blu-ray records all over the place, and it's not even out in 3D yet.

The Blu-ray version sold 2.7 million copies in its first four days, according to Fox, beating The Dark Knight in first-day sales. It has not yet overtaken The Dark Knight as all-time BD sales champion: The Warner title is still ahead with 2.9 million units as of early this week. But it seems likely Avatar will overtake. See Los Angeles Times.

Unhappily for Fox, the movie has also become the most popular pirate Blu-ray title on Torrent Freak with 200,000 presumably illegal downloads. This doesn't even begin to count the illegal downloads through other means. However, the fat BD download is still dwarfed by the popularity of the DVD download.

In Mexico, Avatar discs in such demand that an armed robber assaulted a delivery truck driver, getting away with 3,409 copies.
