The $2 million speaker system

090730-ta-ribbonsSweden's Transmission Audio might have developed the most expensive speaker to date. For a hefty $2 million (that's a 2, followed by six 0's), you can purchase the company's Ultimate system, a massive speaker setup containing several dozen drivers and able to handle enough electricity to demand its own generator.

For mid-range and high-frequency sound, the Ultimate system includes 2 MF/HF speaker panels that each contain 34 meters of the company's ribbon drivers, with 652 neodymium magnets. For low-frequency sound, two woofer panels each use 24 8-inch aluminum cone woofers. For really low-frequency sound, each panel contains 10 15-inch woofers (for a total of 40 in the entire system), with a free-air resonance of 16 Hz. To power the speakers, Transmission Audio includes 6 Bridge Audio Laboratories BP-1 MkII power amps that can put out 500W each (enough to power the speakers, but a fraction of the 31,000 watts the system can handle, continuously). Transmission Audio throws in free installation for the entire setup, a perk of the $2 million price tag.

Impressive, yes? But let me run this by you: six MF/HF panels and six woofer panels (and a small nuclear generator to power them all), to make the truly ultimate 6.1 sound system, the $6 million home theater. We can build it. We have the technology.
